About Springfield Farms:

Main contact: Graeme and Valerie Whyte, Springfield Farms

Location: Limpopo Province, South Africa

LDF since 2025, LEAF Marque since 2025

For the Whyte family, farming with nature has always been part of their philosophy. Over the years, Springfield Farms has hosted numerous research projects, learning from scientists and sharing practical insights with industry peers. Their work aligns naturally with LEAF’s Integrated Farm Management (IFM) approach, which they have consciously formalised through their participation in the LEAF Net Zero project.

Examples of IFM in action at Springfield Farms include:

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): regular scouting, use of bat houses, predatory wasps, and pheromone traps to control insect pests naturally.
  • Pollination: installation of tyre hives, planting indigenous flowering trees, and avoiding night sprays to protect pollinators.
  • Soil and crop management: establishing cover crops in new orchards, applying organic mulches, and using annual soil and leaf sampling to guide nutrient management.
  • Biodiversity and natural capital: conserving and maintaining indigenous forests, creating hiking trails, managing alien plants, and implementing anti-poaching patrols.

Valerie and Graeme are open about the challenges of farming sustainably in a developing country context. While conserving natural forests and biodiversity is “the easy part,” managing energy and carbon footprints is harder. Electricity and diesel use remain their biggest contributors to emissions, and the fragile national grid limits the ability to export renewable energy or operate fully off-grid.

Despite the lack of market incentives or government subsidies, Springfield Farms continues to push boundaries. Their LEAF Marque certification and LEAF Demonstration Farm status provide valuable recognition and credibility - not only for their environmental commitment, but also for representing African agriculture on a global stage.

Research Interests

  • Carbon and Net Zero: understanding and reducing emissions in perennial fruit systems.
  • Biodiversity and ecosystem services: quantifying the role of natural forests and agroforestry in carbon storage and pollination.
  • Water efficiency: maximising rain-fed potential and improving irrigation efficiency where needed.
  • Soil health and nutrient cycling: enhancing organic matter and biological activity through cover crops and compost.
  • Energy transition: exploring solar and hybrid systems suited to high-energy packhouse operations.

Activities and engagement

As LEAF’s first international Demonstration Farm, Springfield Farms plays a pivotal role in connecting LEAF’s global network of farmers, researchers, and supply chains. The Whyte family actively engage with local industry bodies, study groups, and research partners, sharing insights on how integrated, regenerative, and climate-smart practices can be scaled across tropical and subtropical cropping systems.
