About

Warwick Crop Centre is a leader in the field of integrated pest and disease management, with research ranging across plant pests and diseases, crop genetics, biopesticides, soil health and environmental management. In addition to hosting a variety of trials and industry collaborations. The centre is home to the UK Vegetable Genebank – an international resource for research and breeding of vegetable crops, enabling the identification of new traits for pest resistance and crop resilience. They deliver a range of post-graduate educational programmes and funded research degrees.

Activities

Warwick Crop Centre is the host of the Vegetable Genetic Improvement Network (VeGIN) - a network that brings together research focused on key vegetable crops and encourages collaborations between industry and researchers to address how genetic improvement of crop varieties can contribute to a sustainable increase in food production.

In addition to the range of fresh produce research and trials, Warwick Crop Centre also has a newly established policy unit which exists to support the resilience and expansion of the UK’s fresh produce industry. Work in this area has included the creation of the Growing British paper- a strategy for promoting fresh produce production in the UK and a manifesto detailing the research, development & innovation imperatives for a Future UK Government.

In late 2023, Warwick Crop Centre joined forces with Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), to launch the Warwick Agritech initiative. This new partnership aims to combine advanced engineering with plant science, delivering solutions to shape the next generation of agriculture.

Various facilities are based at the centre for use by academics and industry partners, including glass houses facilities, 6 hectares of trial plots, plant breeding and phenotyping facilities and laboratories.
