Climate-Smart Dairy: Research, Innovation, and Real-World Impact: 10am, 10th April
As pressure grows on dairy systems to improve environmental performance while maintaining productivity and resilience, there is increasing focus on what climate-smart farming looks like in practice. Drawing on expertise from the Centre for Dairy Research (CEDAR) - a LEAF Innovation Centre at the University of Reading, this session will explore how climate-smart dairy approaches are being developed, tested and applied, bringing insights from both research and real-world systems.
We're joined by Dr Zoe Barker from the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Reading and Dr Sven Koops who manages the university's farms, where he works on applied dairy systems research. We'll explore:
• What climate-smart dairy means in practice, and how it translates into day-to-day decision-making
• How data and measurement can support improved efficiency, resilience, and emissions reduction
• The role of on-farm trialling and research in developing and validating new approaches
• How to balance productivity, animal health, and environmental outcomes within whole-farm systems
• What practical steps farmers can take to begin or build on climate-smart approaches
